The Canary Islands

The Canary IslandsThe Canary Islands is an archipelago that belongs to Spain even though it is actually closer to the coast of North Africa, with Morocco being its closest neighbour.

There are seven major islands, one minor island and several small islets, all of which were formed by volcanic activity in the North Atlantic Ocean. They are thought to be around 30 million years old which makes them mere youngsters in geological terms.

The best known of the islands are Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife
